Keyboard Rig
Custom roadcase (“chop”) done by my friend Trevor Brooks in New Orleans.
Resting on top of the Hammond. Danny Louis from Govt Mule borrowed this for some overdubs on their latest record, By A Thread. It can be heard on “Brokedown On The Brazos”.
Signed by Garth Hudson, Bobby Whitlock, Bernie Worrell, Melvin Seals, Jason Crosby, Kofi Burbridge, Kyle Hollingsworth, Joey Williams, and Derek Trucks.
Influences
Many would agree that there is an exasperating amount of rubbish out there in the music world today, most of which is being driven more by commercial interests than any sort of substance or artistic quality. Pop culture has gradually come to take precedence over artistic integrity. Couple this with the onset of digital music, and you have the demise of the record industry (but as Thom Yourke once pointed out, this is not a bad thing!) Looking at the bright side, I’m often overcome with the abundance of truly great music that is out there (a lot of it is being made today, but I’d argue that a sizable portion of it was made before the 1980’s, aka the era of “cocaine and computers” as my friend Joe Beckham once mused). I once read an interview with the great Warren Haynes, where he said something along the lines of ‘Musicians are typically the biggest fans’. I believe that there is profound truth to this statement. A musician’s intake directly affects his or her output. With that said, I feel like the well that I am drawing is where it’s at! It’s like a bottomless abyss in which each new discovery leads to another…all contributing to a broader understanding and deeper connections. Truly a source of joy for me personally.
As far as keyboardists are concerned, here is a list of players that I love and in some form or another have had an influence on me.
They are listed in no particular order, with the exception of the first few.
Chuck Leavell. Probably my greatest influence…plain and simple, he is ‘the MAN’
Bob McKamey taught physics and also lead the liturgical choir (I played piano) at the high school I attended (Bellarmine Prep, Tacoma, WA). He was a completely self-taught musician and played by ear. Always really soulful, beautiful stuff. For a couple years there, he and I would meet up on Friday mornings before school and basically run through the music selections for the service that would be held later that morning. It was very loose; musical ‘hang’ time if you will. For the most part I’d just watch him play a song, maybe pick his brain about what he was doing, then he’d let me take a pass. The way he talked about the piano and music theory was always simple–for example, he’d often use colors or hues to describe chords–and as I’m basically self taught and play by ear or by feel, his approach resonated with me. I’ll always be grateful for that experience.
Anyway, I could go on and on about all the following players and how great they are. To borrow from Shuggie Otis, this is ‘Inspiration Information’! If you haven’t already, you will be rewarded for checking any of these people out.
